If Boog Powell starts hitting like we know he can, we have a serious issue in Seattle.
Powell, who was brought up to add depth to the outfield while Scribner hit the DL, joins Ben Gamel, Guillermo Heredia, and Jarrod Dyson in the outfield. With Haniger on the DL and Martin clearing waivers to play for AAA Tacoma, the M’s have pieces all over the place, but good pieces. Haniger was putting up AL Rookie of the Year numbers before his oblique injury, Martin has proved before that he can produce, he’s just had a rough go so far. Between Dyson’s speed and the success of Gamel and Heredia at the dish, we may see a bit of a logjam in Seattle sooner than later.
With as young as most of these guys are, it’s not as clear as some may think at first glance who should stay on the MLB squad. All in all, it’s a good problem to have.
Also, the M’s beat the Indians on the road yesterday.
Ariel Miranda Has a Solid Outing
The Indians are the reigning AL champions, and many have said they’ve only improved since last year with the addition of Edwin Encarnación and the return of Michael Brantley. Regardless, Miranda came out for 5.1 innings and shut them down. The only real blemish was a fourth run homer by Jose Ramirez, the only Cleveland run of the day. Miranda finished with seven strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
Pazos put in 2.1 innings of shutout work, a solid spot out of the bullpen with four strikeouts. Diaz earned his fourth save of the year.
Gamel and Canó Go Yard
Ben Gamel has played in three games and has three RBI. That’s nothing if not consistent. He hit his first homer of the year and added a double, making the absolute most of his time with the team while Haniger heals up on the DL.
Robbie Canó continues to show off the smoothest swing in the league since a certain man named Griffey graced the batters box. His two run shot provided the difference before Gamel put the M’s up for good.
“[Cano] is a veteran player and a really smart player,” Scott Servais told reporters. “He knows what he is looking for when he goes up there and he has gotten a few pitches to drive on this road trip and he hasn’t missed them.”
The M’s take on Cleveland again today, Yovani Gallardo gets the start.
